Continuous cardiac index trending (ProAQT) via a radial arterial line versus standard care in general surgical patients
2015
Introduction Several single-center studies and meta-analyses have shown that perioperative goal-directed therapy may significantly improve outcomes in general surgical patients. We hypothesized that using a treatment algorithm based on pulse pressure variation, cardiac index trending by radial artery pulse contour analysis, and mean arterial pressure in a study group, would result in reduced complications, reduced length of hospital stay and quicker return of bowel movement postoperatively in abdominal surgical patients, when compared to a control group. Methods 160 patients undergoing elective major abdominal surgery were randomized to the Study Group (79 patients) or to the Control Group …
Perioperative Adverse Events in Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Use of Noninvasive Mechanical Ventilation: Key Topics and Clinical Implications
2016
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common public health care problem and, yet, the perioperative management of OSA remains inadequate. Patients affected by this condition are prone to early postoperative complications, in part due to the negative effects of sedative, analgesic, and anesthetic agents on pharyngeal tone and arousal responses to hypoxia, hypercapnia, and obstruction. The use of opioids may also contribute to late adverse events, mainly by suppressing the rapid eye movement phase of sleep. As a result, preoperative screening of patients at high risk of OSA, as well as the implementation of a perioperative strategy to reduce the risk of complications, should lead to early periop…
Causes and Effects of Introducing Surgery Safety Checklist: A Review
2021
The medical treatment process, particularly surgery, is inescapably bound to potential complications or undesirable adverse events. This narrative review aims to present the causes and effects of the introduction of the WHO Surgery Safety Checklist (SSC), the use of which is expected to reduce the number of perioperative errors, complications, and mortality. To achieve this objective, we performed a bibliometric analysis of medical citations indexed in the PubMed database using the SSC subject heading. Findings revealed a total of 1441 articles meeting inclusion status, with 1171 published during the last decade. After the screening of titles and abstracts, the members of the research team …
Perioperative Outcome in Dogs Undergoing Emergency Abdominal Surgery: A Retrospective Study on 82 Cases (2018-2020)
2021
Emergency abdominal surgery carries high morbidity and mortality rates in human medicine; however, there is less evidence characterizing the outcome of these surgeries as a single group in dogs. The aim of the study was to characterize the clinical course, associated complications and outcome of dogs undergoing emergency abdominal surgery. A retrospective study was conducted. Dogs undergoing emergency laparotomy were included in the study. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify variables correlated with death and complications. Eighty-two dogs were included in the study. The most common reason for surgery was gastrointestinal foreign body. Overall 15-day mortality rate was 2…
